I'm right there with you. I wouldn't bring up violence though because the issue there becomes defense of followers. We can't change the actions of followers only our own and I'm in love with Daoism because it teaches you to follow no one and lead no one.

"Therefore, the Sage... [d]oes not compete with anyone, [h]ence no one can compete with him." - Tao 22

Let's never place our religious values against those of others because in competing we can always lose. The Christians are losing the argument in America because they are too concerned with dominating the conversation and competing with other religions; I'm sure that was never Jesus' intent in establishing the church. Lao Tzu's intent and the Buddha's intent were to get away from external arguments and end the internal ones. Let's help each other look inward (not upward and around us) for answers as brothers and sisters should.

@ Brian Because that something begins does not guarantee survival. Human history reads as an incredible series of hairsbreadth escapes.

The history we know contains many examples of civilizations collapsing. Easter Island is a clear example, Rome another. How much easier for one tiny civilization arising in embryonic form, with no heritage of previous civilization, surrounded by nomadism, rising from a single clan of people, to fail and fall back into whence it came?

It's not a matter of "preventing" advanced development. It's a matter of how difficult it is for a tender seedling to prosper when those surrounding it have motive to step on it.

@S.A.Barton Why do you think these types of things (religious/social conflicts) didn't stop us this past 6,000 from developing advanced technology, but for some reason prevented any advanced development for 40,000 years?

Option 5: agriculture and city-building began multiple times during the technologically blank 40,000 years and were nipped in the bud by social convention and/or religion. Imagine: "look, we can grow crops in one place and live here all the time instead of wandering. Maybe we can even keep some delicious and/or useful animals with us, too." "that's not the way we do things! Kill the blasphemer before the gods destroy us all!"

Personally, I think that's the most likely.
